KARNATAKA: AWARDS: Anson Clement Nazareth receives prestigious ‘Yuva Ratna Award 2024’

Anson Clement Nazareth, hailing from the Diocese of Udupi, was honored with the prestigious Karnataka Regional Catholic Bishops’ Council, Youth Commission – Yuva Ratna Award 2024.

The award ceremony took place during the 2nd YCS YSM regional convention held in Bengaluru from April 19- 21. Anson was recognized for his exceptional and selfless contributions to the youth ministry and the Catholic Church in India. Currently serving as the national president of YCS YSM INDIA, Anson Nazareth embodies dedication and service in his leadership roles. 

Originally from Our Lady of Health Church in Shirva, Anson completed his primary and secondary education at Don Bosco School, Shirva. He is currently pursuing his education at St Aloysius Deemed to be University in Mangaluru. Anson’s commitment to the youth ministry has earned him accolades not only at the regional level but also nationally and internationally, culminating in the Yuva Ratna Award 2024. His multifaceted involvement includes various roles in YCS and YSM, along with active membership in the Indian Catholic Youth Movement.

Anson Clement Nazareth stands as a beacon of inspiration and service, embodying the values of leadership and dedication within the Catholic youth community. His recognition with the Yuva Ratna Award 2024 underscores his remarkable contributions and commitment to the betterment of youth initiatives in India and beyond.

INTERNATIONAL: KARNATAKA: DOCTORS: NRI Forum Karnataka felicitates Indian-origin American Doctors at Manipal, Udupi

 American Doctors who are of Indian origin were felicitated by NRI Forum Karnataka on Saturday January 6 at Rajathaadri, Manipal.

Dr Sampath Shivangi, founding member Association of Physicians of India, Dr Dayanand Nayak, Dr Geetha Nayak, cancer specialist, Dr Anupama Bhat, Dr Ramesh Gowda, Dr Udaya Shivangi, convener, Subramanya Bhat, Dr Rajeshwari, Dr Shantha Moorthi, Dr Sujatha Moorthi, Dr Ramdas were felicitated on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Vidyakumari, deputy commissioner of Udupi district, said, “Today we are in the times of globalisation. America once which was very distant is now very near because of globalisation. Non-Resident Indian Forum, Karnataka, has helped Indian-origin doctors in America. It has quickly responded and helped doctors during Ukraine war and other crisis. When I was the zilla panchayat CEO in Tumakuru, when there was need for oxygen cylinders, foreign ambassadors have supplied in more quantity. They have helped a lot during the COVID pandemic.”

Dr Sampath Shivangi, thanking the gathered said, “Earlier, we were called Asian Americans and now we are called Indian Americans. This is one of the achievements we have made. We always want to help our motherland.”

Dr Dayanand Nayak said, “No other Indians have done the work Dr Arathi Krishna, the deputy chairman of the NRI Forum Karnataka has done. We are not only immigrants but also sub-Indians. No doctors from other countries receive respect as Indian doctors get in America. Dr Sampath, Dr Uday and Dr Subramanyam Bhat have contributed a lot.”

The event began with a prayer by Sachin. Dignitaries and all the doctors lighted the lamp.

Dr Arathi Krishna welcomed the gathering. Lakshmamma, working secretary of NRI Forum Karnataka proposed the vote of thanks. M A Gafoor, senior Udupi Congress leader, presided over the event.

KARNATAKA: KANNADA LANGUAGE: Udupi District and Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat felicitate eminent Kannada Software Expert Nadoja K.P. Rao

Nadoja K.P. Rao has made immense contribution to the development of Kannada software.

Eminent Kannada software expert K.P. Rao (Kinnikambala Padmanabha Rao) was felicitated by the Udupi District and Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat for his immense contribution to the development of Kannada software on Sunday, August 6, in Udupi.

Delivering the felicitation address at a programme organised by Nadoja K.P. Rao Felicitation Committee, noted writer and poet Jayanth Kaikini said that preoccupation without thoughtfulness and thoughtfulness without preoccupation were of little use. Viewed from this background, Mr. Rao has been the epitome of culmination of scholarliness and dedication, he said.

Mr. Kaikini noted that Mr. Rao used to learn textbook lessons by-heart in Yakshagana style while in classes 7 and 8 and return the textbooks to friends or the school. His life had not been a tele-serial monologue, but Mr. Rao evinced keen interest in music, cinema, science and many other fields. “He had five computers in his bedroom while many of us were yet to hear the word ‘computer,’ and used to dismantle every part of the machine and reassembly them. Mr. Rao thus had the habit of analysing every issue with curiosity,” Mr. Kaikini said.

In his response, Mr. Rao said both the almighty and the language were invisible to naked eyes; yet they have the power to take everyone together. The animal word learns the language from mother at first. Language empowers everyone to understand each other and encompasses the masses.

A.V. Baliga Hospital Director P.V. Bhandary inaugurated the programme in the presence of MGM College Principal Lakshminarayana Karantha, Moodbidri Jain Mutt seer Swastishree Bhattaraka Charukeerthi Panditacharyavarya Swamiji, Parishat District president Neelavara Surendra Adiga and others.

The programme was followed by workshops on different subjects and culminated with a dialogue with Mr. Rao.

KARNATAKA: BUSINESS & ECONOMY: Bolas Agro Pvt Ltd. receives’Karnataka State Exports Excellence Award 2021′ for Udupi District

Bolas Agro Pvt. Ltd., Karkala, a manufacturer specialised in dry fruits and nuts, has received the Karnataka State Exports Excellence Award 2021 for Udupi district.

KARNATAKA: ARTS & CULTURE / BEAUTY & FASHION: Udupi’s Vimala Lobo Wins ‘Global Mrs Karnataka India International’ State Title

Vimala Lobo recently won a state title ‘Global Mrs Karnataka India International’ at a beauty pageant organised by Global India Entertainment Production.

Vimala was bestowed with the title in a grand ceremony held at Crowne Plaza, Rohini, New Delhi.

The 47-year-old is a nurse with over 16 years of experience. She is married to Maxim D’Souza and has two children Ashish and Mavina.

Speaking to daijiworld, she said, “I am a girl born in a middle-class family in a village and I had a dream of becoming a model when I was a teen. But due to family and social reasons, it remained under cover. As I heard of Mrs India international audition, I could not stop myself from participating. I grabbed the opportunity and I am happy to achieve state title, Mrs Karnataka. I thank my children, husband, and my sister who supported me in this journey. Heartfelt gratitude for conducting the audition in my city, Manipal, Allie Sharma and Giep. Thank you.”

Vimala Lobo was felicitated by MLA Yashpal Suvarna at his home office at Ajjarkad recently.

NATIONAL & KARNATAKA: MARINE & FISHERIES: Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) Scientists Facilitate Successful Cultivation of Indian Pompano through Cage Fish Culture in Padhthonse Village, Udupi district

A team of scientists from the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Mangaluru, has facilitated successful cultivation of Indian Pompano (Trachinotus mookalee) for the first time in Karnataka in the Swarna estuary at Padhthonse village, Udupi district, and its harvest was done from June 2 to June 26.

The pilot project began last November under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan Programme, wherein the beneficiaries got hands-on training in various aspects of cage culture.

Indian Pompano fingerlings, measuring 2-3 cm, were procured from the marine finfish hatchery of the Vishakhapatnam Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI.

About 4,000 fingerlings, each weighing 3-4 gm, were released into cages at a density of 40-50 fishes per cubic metre after acclimatising them to the local condition.

The fingerlings were fed pelleted floating feed twice a day, amounting to 5% of their body weight, said a release from CMFRI-Mangaluru.

After a five-month grow-out period, the Indian Pompano was harvested in batches between June 2 and 26. The average growth observed during this period was 400-450 gm, resulting in a total harvest of 1,300 kg with survival rate of 90%.

The beneficiaries sold the harvested fish locally, fetching prices ranging from ₹450 to ₹490 per kg generating ₹6.1 lakh revenue. With expenses at ₹3.75 lakh, the net profit earned was ₹2.35 lakh in six months.

Success of the pilot would not only provide alternative livelihood for SC families, but also help other local communities. The success has demonstrated the rapid growth rate of Indian Pompano to reach the preferred table-size in six months and the favourable market demand for the same.

Cage cultivation of fish in coastal Karnataka began in 2009-10 in coastal rivers with over 900 cages being installed in estuaries till now.

The Fisheries Department, the National Fisheries Development Corporation etc., extended financial support to over 500 families. Seabass, Red Snapper and Snubnose Pompano were among the species grown in cages.

The research programme was led by A.P. Dineshbabu and his team of scientists comprising Sujitha Thomas, Geetha Sasikumar, Rajesh K. M., and Divya Viswambharan.

KARNATAKA: HEALTH & MEDICAL SERVICES / INNOVATION: First-of-its-kind Innovative Endoscopy Procedure conducted at Kasturba Medical college, Udupi

 A team of doctors from the department of gastroenterology and hepatology – Dr Shiran Shetty (prof and head) Dr Ganesh Bhat, Dr Atish Shetty, Dr Balaji and Dr Sandesh Shet (anaesthesia) performed a complex innovative endoscopy procedure called – endoultrasound guided gastrojejunostomy – GJ for a person with gastric outlet obstruction due to underlying cancer. This procedure is less invasive than surgery and can be done and patients who are not fit for any surgery can be discharged the next day and is very cost-effective. 

A 55-year-old man with pancreatic cancer and gastric outlet obstruction with persistent vomiting was referred from another hospital. After evaluation and discussion with the team and relatives, we decided to perform a unique endoscopic procedure called EUS –gastrojejunostomy (the connection between the stomach and small intestine) for easy passage of food. The patient could tolerate oral feeds after the procedure.

This is the first-of-its-kind done in the coastal belt of Karnataka.

Dr Shiran Shetty, professor and head department of gastroenterology and Hepatology and Deputy Medical Superintendent said, “Due to newer technology more endoscopy procedures can be done for treatment of various complex diseases and is patient friendly and very cost effective.

Kasturba Hospital, Manipal is one of the first medical college hospital in India to utilize newer endoscopy technology for the management of patients from rural and poor backgrounds

Dr Anand Venugopal, chief operating officer, Teaching Hospital MAHE, Manipal praised the team of doctors and staff who were involved in this innovative procedure.

Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal said, “Currently, the department of gastroenterology and Hepatology at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal performs all major and complex endoscopic procedures equivalent to reputed national and international centers and it gives new hopes to the patients of coastal and middle Karnataka.”

NATIONAL: EDUCATION / AWARD WINNER: Udupi’s Schoolgirl Avantika V Rao gets to Speak in front of President

Avantika V. Rao, a Class IX student of Anandathirtha Vidyalaya, Pajaka, Udupi district bagged the prize in the Tata Building India School Essay Competition 2019-20.

Avantika V. Rao, a Class IX student of Anandathirtha Vidyalaya, Pajaka, Udupi district, who had bagged first prize in an essay competition, got a rare opportunity to speak in front of President Droupadi Murmu in Delhi recently.

She bagged the prize in the Tata Building India School Essay Competition 2019-20. The competition was to instil a sense of pride and spirit of nation building among the youth. Many students from across the country had participated in this competition and 29, including Ms. Rao, emerged as winners, according to the school.

All the winners were taken to the Rashtrapati Bhavan on April 17, 2023. Of them, in addition to Ms. Rao, another student Kushi Prajapathi from Nagaur, Rajasthan, got the opportunity to speak in front of the President.

During her three-minute speech, Ms. Rao stressed on ‘Clean India’ and how each person should take the responsibility to achieve it. Recycling of waste will set things in the right direction, she said.

A Rashtrapati Bhavan release on that day said that the President congratulated the winners of the essay competition. She said that during the ‘Amrit Kaal’, the topic of the essay competition ‘Five things I will do to build a great India’ was quite relevant.

Ms. Murmu expressed confidence that when India celebrates 100 years of independence, the contribution of these young minds would be for the betterment of the country as a whole. The President urged children to dream big and try hard to realise their dreams.

It said that Ms. Murmu praised the organisers for providing a platform for young minds to showcase their ideas in writing on a specific topic of national importance or on social issues.

KARNATAKA: EDUCATION: Ramanji Nammabhoomi Conferred with ‘Bank of Baroda Achievers Award’

Ramanji Nammabhoomi, Udupi was conferred with Bank of Baroda Achievers Award at Mangaluru University Syndicate auditorium on March 18 for his all-round achievements in the post graduate courses of Mangalore University.

Mangalore University vice-chancellor professor P Subrahmanya Yedapaditaya who conferred the award said that this handover has increased the award’s value. “The work of identifying talented persons by the Bank of Baroda is commendable,” he said.

Ramanji said that the award has inspired him to achieve more in the education sector. He expressed his gratitude for the award.

NATIONAL: SPORTS / BOATING: ’11th National Dragon Boat Championship’ begins in Swarna River, Heroor,Udupi, February 23 to 26th

700 participants from 15 States are likely to participate in the races till February 26. The event will be held at Swarna river in Heroor.

The 11th national dragon boat championship will begin in Udupi for four days from Thursday, with about 700 participants from 15 States expected to participate.

Organised by the Udupi district administration, in association with the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association, the competitions will be held on the Swarna near Heroor in Udupi.

Those selected in this championship will be eligible to participate in Asian Games to be held in September/October, 2023.

Arrangements like two access roads, space for viewers have been organised in Heroor.

According to Udupi MLA K. Raghupathi Bhat, dragon boat race has evolved into a competitive global sport.

‘‘Udupi got an opportunity to host this championship. The prospects of Udupi in organising water sports championships can be explored further. The championship will have 200 metres, 500 metres, and 2 km race,” he told presspersons.

In each category, 25 participants will get selected to participate in the Asian Games, Mr. Bhat said, adding that the dragon boats have already arrived at the venue.

The boats have been designed to look like a dragon’s head, while the rear is carved to look like a tail.

In this event, 22 persons sit on the narrow boat, while the rest of the team works the oars and one person sitting in the front will beat a drum to egg them on and a coxswain steers the boat. There will be three more persons on reserve.

The 10th national dragon boat championship was held in Bhopal last year.
