Bushra Mateen, a civil engineering student of SLN College of Engineering, Raichur, won 16 gold medals at the 21st annual convocation ceremony of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Belagavi on Thursday. Bushra thus set a record for the most number of gold medals by a student in VTU’s history to date, overhauling the previous tally of 13.

Bushra topped among all institutes of the VTU with an aggregate cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 9.73. She is also the first-rank holder in the civil engineering branch as well as in the women’s category.

Bhavani Nanjunda Wins 2 Medals at National Winter Biathlon 2022. First South Indian Athlete to do so in a National Biathlon.

Bhavani Thekkada Nanjunda from Kodagu district has won two silver medals in 10-km and 5-km race in the National Winter Biathlon Championships-2022 being held at Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir.

For the first time in the history, an athlete from South India has won a national medal in winter biathlon competition.

Biathlon is a combination of shooting and cross country skiing.

Vishwa Konkani Awards 2021 conferred on five eminent achievers

The Vishwa Konkani Awards 2021 were conferred on five eminent achievers of various fields in a grand ceremony held at the World Konkani Centre, Shaktinagar here on Sunday, March 20.

Massam, a collection of Konkani short stories by Antony Barkur (Antony Prakash D’Souza) was conferred with the Best Konkani Book of the Year (Prose) under Smt Vimala V Pai Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Puraskar 2021.

Indradhonu Udeum, a collection of Konkani poems by Uday Narasimha Mhambro, reveived the Best Konkani Book of the Year (Poetry) under Smt. Vimala V Pai Vishwa Konkani Kavita Kruti Puraskar 2021.

Suresh Jaywant Borkar bagged the Smt Vimala V Pai Vishwa Konkani Jeevan Siddhi Samman 2021 for his lifetime contribution to Konkani Language pedagogy, grammar and lexicography.

Corrine A Rasquinha, the founder president of White Doves Psychiatric Nursing and Destitute Home, Mangaluru and Dr Padmanabha Kamath, founder, CAD Foundation were bestowed with the Basti Vaman Shenoy Vishwa Konkani Seva Puraskar 2021.

Skater Anagha Rajesh Honoured with Keladi Chennamma Award

Anagha Rajesh, a well known skating talent from Mangaluru city was awarded with the Hoysala and Keladi Chennamma award for her outstanding achievement in skating on the occasion of International Women’s Day – 2022.

The programme was jointly organized by the District Stree Shakthi Federation, Zilla Panchayat, Karnataka State Women’s Commission, Dakshina Kannada district administration and Bengaluru Women and Child Welfare department at the Zilla Panchayat auditorium in the city.

** BIC Hub’ba to celebrate city NGOs

It will be a two-day event to start from today in Domlur

Walk into Bangalore International Centre (BIC) over the weekend to familiarise yourself with a wide range of city-based Non Government Organisations (NGOs) working in sectors such as childcare, education, health, disability, climate change, waste, water, environment, and animal welfare. 

The annual BIC Hub’ba, which championed handicrafts in 2021, is back this time highlighting the work of city-based NGOs. The event, ‘B.Cause’, will see 72 NGOs put up their stalls. “We want people to appreciate the work of these NGOs. We want Bengalureans to get to know these organisations, engage with their work and explore how they can get involved through donating time, money and skills. Anyone wanting to contribute back to the city, will likely find a cause they are passionate about at the festival,” said V. Ravichandar of BIC.

There will also be workshops for both children and adults, a vegan market, Carnatic music and dance performances as well as the play, Desdemona Roopakam

Jnanika of Mysuru has been appreciated by India Book of Records for reciting reverse counting from 100-0; performing 130 hula hoop spins in one minute, 185 hula hoop spins with Hanuman Chalisa recitation in 2.34 minutes, Bharatanatyam 54 hasta mudras in 47 seconds and solving 3 seasons’ puzzles at the age of 6 years and 4 months, as confirmed on Dec. 27, 2021.

She has also placed a new record in the achievement category of Karnataka Achievers Book of Records by reciting reverse counting numbers 100-01 in 45 seconds, completing Hanuman Chalisa chanting by rotating of 36 inches hula hoop within 02 minutes 42 seconds, finishing 130 laps by rotating with the same measurement hula hoop within 01 minute and reciting freedom fighters names from A-Z in 48 seconds.

 ** AIISH Hosts 53rd National Communication Meet . Awards Presented at Event.

A two-day 53rd national conference of the Indian Speech Language and Hearing Association (ISHA), Mysuru chapter, began at All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Manasagangothri campus this morning.

The event, titled ISHACON, began at the Knowledge Park of the AIISH and is being organised by the Mysuru Indian Speech Language and Hearing Association (MyISHA). More than 1,300 delegates are participating in the event that will be a venue for over 16 plenary talks, 36 oral research paper presentations and 115 poster presentations.

At the conference, three eminent personalities in the field of speech and hearing were felicitated with prestigious oration awards in recognition of their contribution to the field — Dr. M. Pushpavathi, Director, AIISH, received Dr. N. Rathna Oration award, Dr. U. Ajith Kumar, Professor of Audiology, received Prof. S. Kameswaran Endowment Oration award and S. Rajapandian received Prof. R.K. Oza Oration award. Dr. Kalyani Mandke, Director, Mandke Hearing Services, Pune, received the “Bharat award” in recognition of her services as the President of ISHA during 2011-12.

* Mindtree co-founders donate Rs 425 crore to IISc to help build an 800-bed multi-specialty hospital

This is the single largest private donation IISc has received to build the postgraduate medical school and multi-specialty hospital, officials of the Institute said.

Philanthropist couples Susmita and Subroto Bagchi and Radha and NS Parthasarathy collectively donated Rs 425 crore to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to set up a postgraduate medical school along with an 800-bed multi-speciality hospital in its Bengaluru campus.

Mysuru-born Dr. Lakshmi Krishnan, an Oral Pathologist by qualification with keen interest in cancer research and public health, currently works as Senior Clinical Research Scientist at Niramai Health Analytix in Bengaluru. 

Having lived and studied in the Heritage City for many years and now moved out of the city, her fondness for hometown remains quite strong.
