Chikkamagaluru becomes first district in the country to complete NCD screening

Chikkamagaluru has become the first district in the country to complete enrollment and screening of non-communicable diseases (NCD) among people aged above 30.

The screening covered 4.46 lakh people aged above 30 in the district.

With detailed planning and active participation of officers and workers on the ground, the screening was conducted for three months from September 2021 to identify people with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, besides cancers — oral, breast, and cervical.

DRDO constructs multi-storey building in 45 days; to house R&D facilities for AMCA project

India’s premier defence research institute DRDO has built a multi-storey facility for flight control system at Aeronautical Development Establishment in Bengaluru in record 45 days using in-house technology, officials said on March 17.

The seven-storey building, with a plinth area of 1.3 lakh square feet, will house research and development facilities for the development of a fifth-generation medium weight deep penetration fighter jet for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

“The DRDO has completed the construction of a multi-storey infrastructure for flight control system at ADE Bengaluru with hybrid technology consisting of conventional, pre-engineered and precast methodology in record 45 days,” said one of the officials.

India’s first digital water bank sets up shop in Bengaluru

India, and possibly the world, got its first digital water bank, an initiative to aggregate water resources under a single platform, on Monday. 

Science and Technology Minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan, who inaugurated the water bank in Bengaluru, extended the state government’s full support for the initiative, undertaken by AquaKraft Ventures, a company that specialises in sustainable initiatives to provide drinking water and sanitation to all.

Bengaluru Metro’s First Vinyl-Wrapped Train Flagged off . Marks 75 Years of Independence

The first Metro train in Bengaluru with its exterior wrapped completely in vinyl was inaugurated on Friday from Platform 2 of the Kempegowda Metro station towards Kengeri on its Purple Line.

This initiative by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to commemorate 75 years of Independence was flagged off by its Managing Director Anjum Parwez at 10.15 am.

* 27 films win awards at BIFFes

The awards were presented for films released in 2020 and 2021

The 13th edition of the Bengaluru International Film Festival (BiFFes) drew to a close on Thursday with 27 films winning awards in three categories – Asian, Kannada and Indian. The awards were presented for films released for two years, 2020 and 2021, as the festival was not held last year due to the pandemic. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot presided over the event and presented the awards.

* IISc-Bangalore develops paper sensor to detect hydrogen peroxide

Researchers from the Department of Organic Chemistry at the IISc have developed a paper-based sensor for detecting tiny volumes of hydrogen peroxide, a chemical used widely in household and healthcare products like hand sanitiser as a disinfectant, in rocket fuel as a propellant, in biological cells, and also as a starting material in peroxide-based explosives.

Minister for Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood C.N. Ashwath Narayan on Thursday virtually inaugurated the regional office of the International Immigration Centre located at the Urwa Market building in the city.

After inaugurating a Mega Udyoga Mela on the premises of AJ Institute of Engineering and Technology, Mr. Ashwath Narayan said that the immigration centre has been set up to provide skills necessary for aspirants to get jobs in healthcare and other sectors abroad. “We are opening its first regional office in the city,” he said

SCIENCE : Scientists of IISc, India and QBI, Australia have devised new Math Model to predict Coronavirus Vaccine Efficacy

A mathematical model that predicts how antibodies made by COVID-19 vaccines protect against symptomatic infections has been developed by scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru and the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) in Australia.

A paper about the study was published in Nature Computational Science.
