KARNATAKA RECORDS: SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY – ENGINEERING: Shimoga’s Government Junior College Student Sushanth N Prabhu’s Innovative System for Bike Chains Selected for National Level Inspire Awards

Sushanth N. Prabhu developed a system that can prevent a bike chain from getting loose.

An innovative project presented by a high school student of Government Junior College at Megaravalli in Thirthahalli taluk of Shivamogga has been selected for the national-level exhibition and project competition. Sushanth N. Prabhu, a SSLC student, has developed a ‘self chain adjustment system’ for bikes.

The competition, popularly known as Inspire Awards – Manak, is conducted by the National Innovation Foundation of the Department of Science and Technology. Sushanth presented the model for district level and state level competitions under the guidance of his mentor Raghavendra A.Bhat, a teacher in the school. Now it has been selected for the national level competition.

Ahead of the competition, the student and the mentor have been invited to take part in the mentoring workshop to be held at National Institute of Technology (NIT) at Suratkal in Dakshina Kannada on May 24.

INDIA RECORDS: PATENT : KARNATAKA RECORDS: FOOD & BEVERAGES : National Institute of Technology, Surathkal (NITK) Faculty gets Patent for Cashew Apple Wine

The faculty of NITK, Surathkal has received a patent for producing wine using cashew apple and raisins.

The technology is developed by Dr Prasanna Belur Devarabhatta, associate professor in the department of chemical engineering. The patent is titled ‘A process for production of an alcoholic beverage from cashew apple and raisins and the alcoholic beverage produced thereof.”

The NITK had filed an application for the patent in 2012 and received it on May 4, 2022.

Now, NITK is looking forward to transferring the technology (licensing) to the interested entrepreneurs/companies. Further, the NITK will also provide required technical support to the licensee during the implementation of the said technology.

INDIA RECORDS: KARNATAKA RECORDS: CFTRI brings out Seven New Technologies

Licences for some of the technologies have been taken by entrepreneurs

CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) on Wednesday announced the new technologies it has developed in the last one year, on the occasion of the National Technology Day that was observed here.

Also, the CFTRI gave licences to entrepreneurs for commercialising some of its technologies, thanks to the initiatives of the Technology Transfer and Business Development Department. Certificates and mementoes were presented to the licensee at the National Technology Day event for having used the technologies, by former Vice-Chancellor K. Chidananda Gowda who was the chief guest.

In total, seven new technologies, including gluten-free biscuits, gluten-free cookie cake, buckwheat noodles and pasta, multigrain nutri cookies, chikki with moringa, coffee brew mix, and high performance advanced oxidation process for STPs, greywater, industrial wastewaters (food and non-food), were developed by the R and D teams.

Train 18 is a semi high-speed train with GPS system operated by IR under the `Make in India’ initiative. It touched 180 km/hr during tests and maximum of 160 kmph on commercial runs.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis has ensured that the Rail Wheel Factory (RWF) got an opportunity to ready axles for the first time for the prestigious Vande Bharat Express (Train 18).

The Yelahanka-based concern which caters to the requirements of Indian Railways is set to despatch a total of 136 axles for Train 18, India’s fastest train.

Train 18 is a semi high-speed train with GPS system operated by Indian Railways under the `Make in India’ initiative. It touched a speed of 180 km/hr during tests but the maximum during commercial runs is 160 kmph. It is only manufactured at Integral Coach Factory at Perambur in Chennai and presently runs only on two routes: New Delhi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and New Delhi to Varanasi.

GLOBAL INVESTMENT : KARNATAKA RECORDS. INDIA : California-based Applied Materials, USA Acquires Land in Bengaluru for ₹350 crore

California-based Applied Materials has invested ₹350 crore ($50 million) to purchase land in Whitefield in Bengaluru where it is planning to expand its engineering infrastructure.

The company said the expansion would boost its next phase of growth in India.

“We expect this investment to support future product development and R&D, as well as benefit the development of the local supply chain,’‘ said Srinivas Satya, country president and Managing Director, Applied Materials India at Semicon India 2022 in Bengaluru on April 29.

Indian Government’s mission mode approach to evolve the country’s semiconductor sector, together with the ease-of-business initiatives and scaling up of indigenous electronics end-manufacturing, were positive and practical steps to enable its Semiconductor Mission, he added.

Applied Materials supplies equipment, services and software for the manufacture of semiconductor (integrated circuit) chips for electronics, flat panel displays for computers, smartphones, televisions, and solar products.

GLOBAL – FIRST IN INDIA: Bengaluru, First Indian City to join the global Silk City Network

Bengaluru has become the first Indian city to get into the global network of silk cities, celebrated French textile artist Isabelle Moulin said in Kolkata, expressing hope that in the next few years West Bengal’s Murshidabad district — known to produce fine silk in the over the past 300 years — may join the global silk city network.

“Two days ago, I launched the membership of Bengaluru — the first Indian city in the global Silk City network.

Now, we have nine countries and 13 cities.

If everything goes fine, then with time, I hope ‘Murshidabad Silk’ too can make it to the network.

The network helps artisans and craftsmen to exchange knowledge, build trade relations and understand various craftsmanship techniques,” Ms. Moulin said during an interactive session with select media persons at Kolkata’s Oxford Bookstore.

AVIATION : HAL-Israel Aerospace Sign MoU for Conversion of Civil (Passenger) Aircraft into Multi-Mission Tanker Transport Aircraft (MMIT)

In a move aimed at bolstering the ‘Make in India’ campaign, HAL has entered into a MoU with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to convert Civil (Passenger) aircraft to Multi Mission Tanker Transport (MMTT) aircraft in India.

The move will provide India’s defence ecosystem with new capabilities and cost effective solutions in the market.

The MoU will facilitate HAL and IAI’s decades’ long expertise in developing, manufacturing and producing leading defence platforms.

The scope of MoU also covers “passenger to freighter aircraft” conversion along with MMTT conversions.

A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Delhi by D Maiti, CEO (MiG Complex), HAL and Yaacov Berkovitz, Vice President and General Manager, Aviation Group, IAI in the presence of Chandraker Bharati, JS (Aero), Ministry of Defence, Goveernment of India.

Karnataka ranks first in renewable rich States with 15 GW of installed capacity base and another 9 GW of green capacity being under implementation

Karnataka distribution companies (discoms) have become the top seller of renewable energy under the Green Term Ahead Market (GTAM) at the Indian Energy Exchange Limited (IEX).

Power Company of Karnataka Limited (PCKL) has a market share of 74% on the sell side in IEX GTAM market since its inception, selling 2.67 billion units (BU) out of 3.6 BU on the exchange till January, 2022, IEX officials said, adding that Karnataka is now also leveraging the recently commenced Green Day Ahead Market (GDAM) for sale of its surplus renewable power.
