The Ophthalmologist Power List 2022 is a roll call of achievers in clinical practice and vision research.

Bengaluru-based cornea-refractive surgeon and translational scientist Rohit Shetty has been named as one of the Top 100 most inspiring and influential ophthalmologists of the world by The Ophthalmologist magazine. Dr Shetty is the first Kannadiga to make it to the ‘power list’.

The Ophthalmologist Power List 2022 is a roll call of achievers in clinical practice and vision research. The list is prepared from a lineup of 450 names by an international panel of 20 judges.

WORLD RECORDS: HEALTH & MEDICAL SCIENCES: Guinness World Record to Dr. Shanthala Thuppanna of Sakra World Hospital for the Highest Number of Fibroids Removed

A 34-year-old journalist and former TV anchor, Ritika Sharma from Bengaluru, has set a new Guinness World Record for getting the highest number of fibroids removed from her uterus. The patient had 236 fibroids removed, which included a large cauliflower-shaped fibroid measuring up to 20 X 20 X 10 cm and many other smaller fibroids of different sizes, weighing 2,250 grams in total. 

This complex surgical procedure was performed in October last year by Shanthala Thuppanna, Senior Consultant and Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Sakra World Hospital in Bengaluru.

The title certificate was presented by Guinness World Record adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar to the patient and her doctor in the city on Thursday

 ALL INDIA RECORDS: Karnataka Third in the Country for Medical Consultations via eSanjeevani

Union Health Ministry’s flagship telemedicine service has registered more than three crore teleconsultations till now.

The state government has been awarded third place in the country for in number of medical consultations (25,03,995) through the eSanjeevani platform at the Ayushman Bharath Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWC) since its inception in December 2020. It is a doctor-to-doctor telemedicine service to provide general and specialised health services in rural areas through the ‘Hub-and-Spoke’ model.

The award was given in the ‘Strengthening Healthcare to the Last Mile’ category to mark the 4th anniversary of the setting up of AB-HWCs. The Union Health Ministry’s flagship telemedicine service eSanjeevani has registered more than three crore tele-consultations and the state government has provided medical consultations to 47,68,123 people in total as on April 15.

The state stands third in the category where patients are provided the service at the HWCs after Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.

Project to improve treatment of neurological disorders was launched January

Soon diagnosis and timely treatment of common neurological problems, such as epilepsy, headache, stroke, dementia and brain infections, can be done from the grassroots level of primary health centres, secondary-level district hospitals and NIMHANS at the tertiary level in the State.

Recognising the need to improve treatment and prevent neurological disorders in the community, the State Government in association with NIMHANS and Niti Ayog launched the Karnataka Brain Health Initiative (Ka-BHI) in January.

GUINNESS WORLD RECORD: ‘Most Pledges Plaque to Manipal’s Kasturba Hospital of Stroke Awareness Programme’

Stroke is an important non-communicable disease. One in four adults will experience a stroke in their lifetime. To raise the awareness about stroke, on the eve of World Stroke day October 29, 2021, Department of Neurosciences, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal conducted a stroke awareness campaign.

Kasturba Hospital, Manipal along with various other institutions in India participated in creating stroke pledges for awareness through a stroke assessment App as an initiative taken by BoehringerIngelheim India, and attempted to create a Guinness World Record of ‘Most pledges received for a stroke awareness campaign’.

Kasturba Hospital, Manipal gave significant contributions and by creating a total of 17,691 pledges all over India, a Guinness World Record was successfully created.

The hospital also conducted stroke screening activities by Blood pressure and blood sugar check along with stroke awareness and education to over 500 patients/participants attending KH OPD. The pledge registration for all attempts was held on the portal https://strokeriskcalculator.in.

FIRST TIME IN BENGALURU: In a First, Three Green Corridors Created on a Single Day for an Organ Donation

Cadaveric organ donation got a boost in the city on Wednesday with three zero-traffic green corridors created on a single day to transport vital organs from different hospitals.

Authorities from Jeevasarthakathe, the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), which is the nodal agency that facilitates cadaver organ donations, said this is the first time that three green corridors had been created on a single day. There were back-to-back organ donations since Tuesday evening and two green corridors were also created on Tuesday night – one in Mangaluru and another in Bengaluru.

“We placed the requests for three green corridors with the Bengaluru traffic police in a gap of 30 minutes. While one green corridor was created at 10 a.m. on Wednesday from Manipal Hospitals on Old Airport Road to BGS Global Hospitals in Mysuru (to transport a liver), another was created at 10.30 a.m. from Aster RV hospital to MS Ramaiah-Narayana Hrudayalaya (to transport a heart). At 11 a.m., another corridor was created from the same hospital (Aster RV) to Bengaluru International airport to transport donated lungs to KIMS, Secunderabad.

HEALTH CARE: Life-Time Achievement Award Conferred on Dr. S.N. Mothi for Contribution to the field of HIV/AIDS

Dr. S.N. Mothi, Founder-Trustee, and Chairman, Asha Kirana Charitable Trust, Mysuru, was conferred the ‘Life-Time Achievement Award’ by AIDS Society of India at the 13th National Conference of ASICON held at Hyderabad from Apr.3 to 5 for his outstanding contribution to the field of  HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Mothi received the award from Dr. Marjolein Jacobs from UNAIDS, in the presence of Dr.  I.S. Gilada, President, AIDS Society of India .

Bengaluru based Psychiatrist Dr Sachin Nagendrappa Wins “Global Schizophrenia Award 2022′ 

Dr Sachin Nagendrappa, assistant professor of psychiatry, St Johns Medical College, was awarded the Global Schizophrenia award 2022.

His research began during his MD with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS).

“My research focuses on the clinical and biological aspects of treatment-resistant schizophrenia and postpartum psychosis,” he says. Sachin has collaborated with international and national research projects funded by UNICEF and ETH Switzerland.
