Mangaluru: Fr Ronald Serrao honoured with Victor Rodrigues Konkani Literary Award

“The contribution of the Catholic Church in the development of Konkani language in this region is commendable,” opined Dr Edward Nazareth, renowned Konkani literate and Professor of Orthopaedics at Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences, while felicitating Fr Dr Ronald Serrao, Rector of St Joseph Seminary who was bestowed upon Victor Rodrigues Konkani literary award 2021.

The award ceremony was organized at ‘Matha-Kripa’ hall of Samanvaya at Grurpur-Kaikmaba on Sunday February 27. Fr Antony Lobo, parish priest of Gurpur-Kaikamba parish was the chief guest.

It will provide skills necessary for aspirants to get jobs in healthcare and other sectors abroad

Minister for Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood C.N. Ashwath Narayan on Thursday virtually inaugurated the regional office of the International Immigration Centre located at the Urwa Market building in the city.

After inaugurating a Mega Udyoga Mela on the premises of AJ Institute of Engineering and Technology, Mr. Ashwath Narayan said that the immigration centre has been set up to provide skills necessary for aspirants to get jobs in healthcare and other sectors abroad. “We are opening its first regional office in the city,” he said

** Christ University VC conferred Honorary Colonel Commandant rank

Dr. Fr Abraham Vettiyankal Mani, vice-chancellor of Christ (Deemed to be University) has been conferred the honorary rank of Colonel Commandant in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) by the Ministry of Defence. The pipping was done by Lt. Gen Gurbirpal Singh, AVSM, VSM, the Director General of NCC, at the Parachute Regiment Training Centre on Thursday.

“This privilege has been accorded to only three vice-chancellors from Karnataka and 11 in India in 2022 by the Ministry of Defence,” said a press release. This recognition is based on the contributions of the University to NCC with its cadets joining armed and paramilitary forces in significant numbers, the release added. 

Innovation Lab Inaugrated at PDA Engineering College (Kalaburagi) in Collaboration with Danish Enterprises

H.E. Freddy Svane, Ambassador of Denmark inaugurated an innovation lab established at the college as part of a collaboration with Danish companies and institutes.

After inaugurating the innovation lab, which has been set up to facilitate and develop innovations in the fields of Internet of Things, green energy, climate change mitigation, agricultural applications and electric vehicle systems, among others, Mr. Svane stressed the need for the development of in-house skilling to face global challenges such as global warming.

She has also placed a new record in the achievement category of Karnataka Achievers Book of Records by reciting reverse counting numbers 100-01 in 45 seconds, completing Hanuman Chalisa chanting by rotating of 36 inches hula hoop within 02 minutes 42 seconds, finishing 130 laps by rotating with the same measurement hula hoop within 01 minute and reciting freedom fighters names from A-Z in 48 seconds.

 ** AIISH Hosts 53rd National Communication Meet . Awards Presented at Event.

A two-day 53rd national conference of the Indian Speech Language and Hearing Association (ISHA), Mysuru chapter, began at All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Manasagangothri campus this morning.

The event, titled ISHACON, began at the Knowledge Park of the AIISH and is being organised by the Mysuru Indian Speech Language and Hearing Association (MyISHA). More than 1,300 delegates are participating in the event that will be a venue for over 16 plenary talks, 36 oral research paper presentations and 115 poster presentations.

At the conference, three eminent personalities in the field of speech and hearing were felicitated with prestigious oration awards in recognition of their contribution to the field — Dr. M. Pushpavathi, Director, AIISH, received Dr. N. Rathna Oration award, Dr. U. Ajith Kumar, Professor of Audiology, received Prof. S. Kameswaran Endowment Oration award and S. Rajapandian received Prof. R.K. Oza Oration award. Dr. Kalyani Mandke, Director, Mandke Hearing Services, Pune, received the “Bharat award” in recognition of her services as the President of ISHA during 2011-12.

* Student develops mini-oxygen plant in just eight months, all by himself

A 19-year-old engineering student has single-handedly invented a prototype of a mini-oxygen plant that produces up to 94.5 per cent pure oxygen and can be used in homes, hospitals as well as industries.

Called OxiPlant, the device works on the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process.

It took Tejas P Karanji, a first-year student of electronics and communication engineering at PES University, all of eight months to conceptualise, design, fabricate and develop the product.

Sandesha Foundation trustee Roy Castelino announced the names of 16 achievers including a trust who will be awarded the annual Sandesha Awards.

Addressing media at a press meet, he said, “This year’s award programme shall be held on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at 5.30 pm at Sandesha institute ground. Dr. Henry D’Souza, bishop of Bellary and chairman of the Institute shall preside over the function. Dr P Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya, vice chancellor of Mangalore University will be the chief guest. Shashi Kumar, IPS, commissioner of police, mangaluru will be the guest of honour. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, bishop of Mangalore and Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop of Udupi, Fr Francis Assisi Almeida, director of Sandesha, Fr Ivan Pinto and Roy Castelino, the trustees of the institute shall be the guests.

“The 16 achievers who will be conferred with the awards are Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Amar Konkani, Dr Sunitha Shetty, Nagesh Hegde, Meena Rebimbus, Avithas Adalphus Cutinha (Dolla), Lakshman Saab Chauri, and Samarthanam Trust for the year 2021 and Rahmath Tarikere, Melvyn Rodrigues, B K Gangadar Kirodian, Dr T C Poornima, Alwyn Noronha, Kasaragod Chinna, Dr P K Rajashekar, and Sa R Raghunath for 2022.
