ARTS & CULTURE: HISTORY: Prof. Ravi Korisettar, NIAS-Bengaluru, gets MP Government’s Dr. Vishnu Sridhar Wakankar National Award

Ravi Korisettar, adjunct professor at NIAS, Bengaluru, and honorary director of Robert Bruce Foote Sanganakallu Archaeological Museum, Ballari, has been chosen by the Madhya Pradesh Government for the Dr. Vishnu Sridhar Wakankar national award for 2018.

Prof. Korisettar served in the Department of History and Archaeology, Karnatak University, Dharwad, from 1989 to 2013.

His discovery of the youngest Toba tuff (YTT), volcanic ash of Sumatra origin, in peninsular river deposits has been hailed as a ‘great discovery’ and its significance in dating the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic has brought the Indian subcontinent to the forefront of the debate on the expansion of modern humans out of Africa.

Prof. Korisettar is credited with the discovery of a large number of prehistoric painted rock shelters in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh which led to a series of investigations on identifying suitable dating methods for rock art and understanding the non-material culture of the authors of these paintings.

He was co-editor of Quaternary Environments and Geoarchaeology of India (Geological Society of India,1995), The Rise of Early Human Behaviour in Global Context (Routledge,1998), Indian Archaeology in Retrospect (ICHR and Manohar [4 volumes], 2001/2), and a special issue of Quaternary International (vol. 258, 2011) and editor of  Beyond Stone and More Stones (Vo. 1: 2017 and Vol. 2: 2018).

GUINNESS WORLD RECORD: ‘Most Pledges Plaque to Manipal’s Kasturba Hospital of Stroke Awareness Programme’

Stroke is an important non-communicable disease. One in four adults will experience a stroke in their lifetime. To raise the awareness about stroke, on the eve of World Stroke day October 29, 2021, Department of Neurosciences, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal conducted a stroke awareness campaign.

Kasturba Hospital, Manipal along with various other institutions in India participated in creating stroke pledges for awareness through a stroke assessment App as an initiative taken by BoehringerIngelheim India, and attempted to create a Guinness World Record of ‘Most pledges received for a stroke awareness campaign’.

Kasturba Hospital, Manipal gave significant contributions and by creating a total of 17,691 pledges all over India, a Guinness World Record was successfully created.

The hospital also conducted stroke screening activities by Blood pressure and blood sugar check along with stroke awareness and education to over 500 patients/participants attending KH OPD. The pledge registration for all attempts was held on the portal https://strokeriskcalculator.in.

Bengaluru based Psychiatrist Dr Sachin Nagendrappa Wins “Global Schizophrenia Award 2022′ 

Dr Sachin Nagendrappa, assistant professor of psychiatry, St Johns Medical College, was awarded the Global Schizophrenia award 2022.

His research began during his MD with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS).

“My research focuses on the clinical and biological aspects of treatment-resistant schizophrenia and postpartum psychosis,” he says. Sachin has collaborated with international and national research projects funded by UNICEF and ETH Switzerland.

12 KV Students from Karnataka for Pariksha Pe Charcha with PM Narendra Modi

Twelve students of classes 9 to 12 from Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV) in Karnataka are among the students selected for interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Pariksha Pe Charcha at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, on April 1.

An online creative writing competition was held between December 2021 and January 2022 to select the students.

Three students selected from Bengaluru Urban educational district are class 10 student Aayushi Jha from KV 1, Jalahalli West; class 11 student Ayush Mani Tripathi from KV ASC (S) Centre Bengaluru; both participated in the ‘Clean India Green India’ competition; and class 12 student Shiwangi Mishra from KV ASC Centre, who participated in the ‘Environmental Conservation and Climate Change Resilience’ competition.

Two students selected from Belagavi district are class 10 student Shreyas Marganakop from KV No. 3 and class 11 student Janhavi Dwibedi from KV No. 1, Air Force Station, Sambra, who had participated in ‘Environmental Conservation and Climate Change Resilience’ competition.

Two students selected from Bengaluru Rural district are class 10 student Rishi Kumar Polepally from KV AFS Yelahanka, who participated in ‘Digital Collaboration in Classroom’ competition; and class 10 student Janhavi Dev from KV No. 1 Jalahalli West, who participated in ‘Exam Stress Management Strategies During COVID-19’.

The other students are class 10 student G.U. Akshaya from KV Shivamogga; class 10 student Anusha M.C. from KV Tumakuru; and class 9 student Shreya N. from KV Chamarajanagar, who all participated in ‘Digital Collaboration in Classroom’ competition; class 9 student S. Padmapriya from KV Kodagu, who participated in ‘Exam Stress Management Strategies During COVID-19’; and class 12 student M. Sahana from KV Donimalai, Ballari, who participated in ‘Clean India Green India’ competition.

Karnataka: SLN Engineering College Student Bushra Mateen Wins 16 gold Medals, Breaks Previous VTU record. Notches Up 2 Firsts.

Bushra Mateen, a civil engineering student of SLN College of Engineering, Raichur, won 16 gold medals at the 21st annual convocation ceremony of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Belagavi on Thursday. Bushra thus set a record for the most number of gold medals by a student in VTU’s history to date, overhauling the previous tally of 13.

Bushra topped among all institutes of the VTU with an aggregate cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 9.73. She is also the first-rank holder in the civil engineering branch as well as in the women’s category.

Rammanahalli becomes first Karnataka village to come under WiFi net – March 01st, 2022

Rammanahalli, on Mahadevapura Road, on the outskirts of Mysuru, has become the first village in Karnataka, to entirely come under WiFi internet coverage.

With the establishment of a Public Data Office (PDO), the entire village has become a cost-effective WiFi zone, with high-speed internet, provided by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), an Union government-owned telecommunications service provider.

Launching the services at MGR Enterprises in the village on March 1, Vivek Banzal, Director, Consumer Fixed Access, BSNL, said, “There are WiFi services at several places. But, this is the first time, the entire village has been provided the facility.The people of the village can get high-speed internet at a lesser price.”

* IISc-Bangalore develops paper sensor to detect hydrogen peroxide

Researchers from the Department of Organic Chemistry at the IISc have developed a paper-based sensor for detecting tiny volumes of hydrogen peroxide, a chemical used widely in household and healthcare products like hand sanitiser as a disinfectant, in rocket fuel as a propellant, in biological cells, and also as a starting material in peroxide-based explosives.

“The contribution of the Catholic Church in the development of Konkani language in this region is commendable,” opined Dr Edward Nazareth, renowned Konkani literate and Professor of Orthopaedics at Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences, while felicitating Fr Dr Ronald Serrao, Rector of St Joseph Seminary who was bestowed upon Victor Rodrigues Konkani literary award 2021.

The award ceremony was organized at ‘Matha-Kripa’ hall of Samanvaya at Grurpur-Kaikmaba on Sunday February 27. Fr Antony Lobo, parish priest of Gurpur-Kaikamba parish was the chief guest.
